Our opening concert for the 2008 season's Music Series brings a return visit of Dr. Robert Poovey, who last played here at St. Mark's in 1995.

Dr. Poovey is Director of Music at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Rochester, New York. A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, he earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1989. He also holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music and Southern Methodist University, respectively.

From 1995 to 2006 he served as Director of Music Ministries at historic St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Atlanta, where he developed a varied, innovative and active music program involving some seven groups, and from 2006 to 2007 he was Project Director for Casavant Frères, one of the leading pipe organ companies in North America.

Dr. Poovey has served on the Liturgical Commissions in the Episcopal Dioceses of North Carolina, Olympia (Western Washington State) and Atlanta, and also has been on the faculty for the Leadership Program for Musicians Serving Small Congregations, a two-year course of study that leads to participants' receiving The Presiding Bishop's Diploma in Church Music.

With appearances from the East Coast to Hawaii to his credit, Dr. Poovey has maintained an active performing schedule as well, and he maintains active memberships in The Association of Anglican Musicians, The American Guild of Organists, and Early Music America.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception.
