St. Mark’s Preschool Information

Opening, September 2010 with one classroom for three and four year olds on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Our preschool is inspired by the Reggio Emilia project approach to teaching and is a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools.

Our Classroom

Our preschool will open in September 2010 with one classroom for three and four year olds.   We will have a maximum of fifteen children and a staff of three teachers. Starting in the fall of 2011, we plan to expand to two classrooms serving both three and four year olds.

Schedule

Classes will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings and our school day begins at 9:15 am and ends at 11:30 am.  Our school calendar will be aligned as closely as possible to the Glen Ellyn School District 41 calendar.  Our first day of school will be September 14.

Fees

The cost for the school year will be $2,250 a year ($250 per month X 9 months). Payment may be made for the full year or in three installments.  We are happy to offer a sibling discount.

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy is influenced by the Reggio Emilia project approach to teaching which features child-directed learning.  Children are celebrated as individuals, and their learning is a personal journey supported through a partnership between the child, his/her parents and teachers.

Teachers act as documenters, observers and researchers, and the environment, as a “third teacher”; learning is facilitated through exploration and project work.  An emergent curriculum, it builds on the interests, passions and play of children while also encompassing developmentally appropriate concepts and skills.  Teachers thoughtfully and purposefully introduce knowledge and materials the children need to grow both academically and emotionally.

Religious Statement

St. Mark’s Preschool is a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools. In the Episcopal tradition, our school emphasizes the love for all of God’s children. In keeping with the Vision of St. Mark’s, we believe in inclusiveness and seek diversity as an integral aspect of the preschool experience.

Our students will be introduced to Episcopal values through grace, stories from the Judeo-Christian tradition and visits to our chapel with their teachers and St. Mark’s clergy.

An Episcopal education begins with the premise that we are all explorers, and we invite our families and students to explore and celebrate the differences among us. Parents are always welcome to attend activities that involve the discussion of God at our school. Children of all faiths are welcome.

Kindergarten Readiness

Our students will engage in enriching and integrated experiences in areas such as art, science, math, literacy, dramatic play and music, in a play and project-based environment.  This curriculum will create a strong foundation for kindergarten.

St. Mark’s Preschool Registration Information

If you would like more information about our preschool, please contact preschool@stmarksglenellyn.org or phone our church office at (630) 858-1020.

We are currently taking names and information for our interest list. For Fall 2010, spaces at our preschool will be filled on a first come first serve basis from our interest list.

The DCFS licensing process does not permit us to register and accept deposits until we receive our permit.  This is a very big challenge for all new preschools, but we understand that we need to work through their processes and schedule.  According to DCFS, we are “proceeding in good faith to meet Departmental licensing standards”, so we are confident that we will receive our license in August.  Our program is ready to open in September.  Staffing, furniture, materials and curriculum and procedures are in place.

Once we receive our license, we will contact families on our interest list about registration.
